Colombia's Living Landscapes: Cycling, Culture & the Sierra Nevada

From: 2026-11-06 To: 2026-11-16

Eleven Days, Two Riders, and the Colombia Most Visitors Skip

Rod and Wendi told us early on what they didn’t want: typical tourist stops, a rushed itinerary, or a city added just because it’s on the map — which is exactly why Medellín isn’t on this one. What they wanted was long rides and real climbs, so the trip is built around Barichara, with two full days on the bike through the Chicamocha backroads to Galán and Palmar, then on through the Fonce river valley to the vineyard at Charalá. Villa de Leyva and Barichara connect by the kind of Andean road that’s worth the hours in the car, not just a way to get there. In the Sierra Nevada, Refugio Serrano was chosen over the more visited Tayrona coast, trading beach time for a real hike to the Arhuaco community of Busingueka. Timing lands you in Cartagena during the city’s Independence week, including the November 12 Bando parade — a local celebration, not a staged one. Eleven days, two riders, and a route built for people who’d rather earn the view.

Day 2: Bogota Savannah highlights and drive to Villa de Leyva

Saturday, November 7, 2026

Bogota Savannah highlights and drive to Villa de Leyva

Start Time: 08:30

Duration: 10 hrs.

Pick up place: Sofitel Bogota Victoria Regia

Explore the rolling landscapes of the Bogotá Savannah and Boyacá highlands on a journey to Villa de Leyva. Select stops between underground salt cathedrals, sacred lagoons, and historic colonial landmarks that defined Colombia’s identity.

Leave the vertical energy of Bogotá behind and cross the high-altitude plateau known as the Sabana, where the air grows crisp and the landscape opens into a patchwork of emerald pastures and colonial outposts. This route follows the spine of the Eastern Andes, a territory where Muisca indigenous heritage meets the architectural legacy of the Spanish conquest. The transition from the dense capital to the sun-drenched, fossil-rich soil of Boyacá reveals a country of varied rhythms and deep-rooted traditions.

The journey unfolds through encounters with deep earth and high peaks. In Zipaquirá or Nemocón, descend into the cool, mineral-scented silence of underground salt mines, where massive chambers carved into ancient sea deposits create a profound sensory experience of scale and shadow. At the Guatavita Lagoon, the wind ripples across dark waters where the legend of El Dorado began, surrounded by high-altitude Andean forest. Further north, the Puente de Boyacá stands as a silent witness to the 1819 battle that secured Colombia’s independence, marking the shift from colony to republic.

The destination, Villa de Leyva, appears as a preservation of 16th-century architecture, characterized by whitewashed walls and heavy timber balconies. The massive Plaza Mayor, one of the largest cobblestone squares in the Americas, reflects the stark beauty of the region’s dry climate. Walking these streets is an exercise in continuity, where the texture of the stone and the stillness of the mountain air connect the contemporary traveler to centuries of history. This journey is more than a transfer; it is a narrative of how Colombia’s central highlands shaped the nation's character.

Important information

  • Terrain & Physical Demand: Moderate physical demand. The experience includes walking on uneven cobblestone streets and potential steep uphill hiking if visiting the Guatavita Lagoon. Altitudes range from 2,100 m (6,890 ft) to 3,000 m (9,842 ft).
  • Accessibility: Accessibility is limited. Many sites involve stairs, steep paths, or irregular cobblestone surfaces that are difficult for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.
  • Logistics:
    • The Guatavita Lagoon is typically closed to the public on Mondays.
    • The drive from Bogotá to Villa de Leyva covers approximately 165 km (103 mi) and takes several hours depending on the chosen stops.
    • Weather in the highlands is unpredictable and can change from bright sun to heavy rain quickly.
  • Packing List:
    • Sunscreen
    • Wide-brimmed hat
    • Light layers for temperature shifts
    • Rain jacket
    • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
    • Hydration

Observe endemic and migratory species in the lush foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world's highest coastal mountain range. Join local experts to identify vibrant tanagers, hummingbirds, and toucans within this vital avian sanctuary.

Ascend into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range on Earth, where the air cools and the forest thickens. This territory serves as a vital sanctuary for avian life and a cornerstone of Colombian natural identity. Guided by local observers who know the specific calls and rhythms of the canopy, move through a landscape defined by its ancestral importance and its role as a global hotspot for biodiversity.

The forest stirs at dawn, vibrating with a complex symphony of calls. Walk along narrow trails where the scent of damp earth and tropical flora fills the air. Spot the iridescent flash of endemic hummingbirds, the rhythmic movement of toucans with vibrant beaks, and the subtle textures of antbirds and flycatchers among the dense foliage. Every sighting offers a window into the intricate ecosystem of the mountain, from the lower tropical belts to the mist-covered slopes.

This region holds a critical position for over 130 migratory species traveling between continents, making it a living bridge of natural history. Observing these birds is an act of witnessing the resilience of a territory where community-led conservation efforts work to protect fragile habitats. This experience connects visitors to the contemporary pulse of Colombian environmental stewardship and the deep-rooted pride of those who guard these ancient forests.
