Cartagena is a beautiful city that exhibits all the charm of its colors, climate, warm people and historical legacy. This tour begins with a visit to the San Felipe Castle, a fort built by the Spanish on top of a mountain to gain control of the bay. There, you will have the opportunity to discover the impressive architecture and history behind it. The city tour of Cartagena will continue with a pleasant walk through the Historic Center where you will visit the Clock Tower in the Plaza de la Aduana, a place used for the trade of enslaved Africans during the colonial period.  Then you will go to the square in front of the San Pedro Claver Church, a historic church that exhibits art and religious history. In that square we will have a short break for a refreshing juice or coffee. From there, we continue to Plaza de Bolivar surrounded by some of the city's most iconic colonial buildings. Visit the Monastery of La Popa built on the XVII century, go to the highest point of the city for an incredible lookout. Finally we will leave through the Clock Tower to pass by Centenario Park, a beautiful oasis in the middle of downtown where free sloths, marmosets, iguanas and other animals live and finish our tour in Getsemaní, a very special neighborhood, very colorful, full of graffiti, flowers, colorful houses and music everywhere. Note: Please note that the vehicle will only be available for 3 hours while we visit Castillo de San Felipe and La Popa Convent. Transport back to the hotel is not included as the tour ends on foot in the historic centre.

San Basilio de Palenque was the first free town in America, founded by self-emancipated former slaves during Colombia’s colonial period. This town remains a symbol of resistance and of African pride due to its impressive story. Thanks to isolation and resistance, Palenqueros preserved African culture while creating new local manifestations such as Alegrías (a type of candy), Son Palenquero (a music genre) and the first and only Spanish-based creole language, which is still spoken in this place.

San Basilio de Palenque is located in the Montes de María region, about an hour and a half outside Cartagena. On the car ride, you will be able to learn about the African exodus and slavery situation during the colonial period accompanied by a local guide. 

After a warm welcome upon arrival in San Basilio, you will be able to connect with the local culture by meeting the town’s people and local guides. You’ll have the chance to hear the language - Lengua Palenquera - and even pick-up a few words yourself. 

On a walking tour through the town, you will come across important monuments and colorful paintings that will bring you even closer to understanding the history of this place like the statue of Benkos Bioho, the Congolese leader that escaped forming the first African settlements in the territory in the early 1600s or Kid Pambele, boxing world champion in 1972 and son of the town's fighting spirit, and many more incredible insights and stories that make this day trip from Cartagena and adventure that you will never forget.

Something not to be missed on a cultural experience in San Basilio is trying their delicious food. While trying mouthwatering sweet and savory preparations like Sancocho, Coconut Rice and the tasty Cocadas sold by "Palenqueras" on the streets of Cartagena, you will be taught about their traditional recipes and what they mean to them.
